Project365: Day 135 - Bike to Art

Nearly 60 riders joined the Des Moines Bike Collective and the Iowa Architectural Foundation for the Bike to Art event, a tour of the wonderful art and architecture of Downtown Des Moines via bicycle. This was one of the signature events for Bike Month 2011 in Des Moines.

Day 135 - Bike to Art: Pappajohn Sculpture Park

The tour group rode to the Pappajohn Sculpture Park to learn about a few of the prominent pieces in the park.

Day 135 - Bike to Art: Iowa State Capitol

After making their way through Downtown while visiting some of the most notable buildings in Des Moines, riders made their way up Capitol Hill to visit the monuments and art on the Capitol grounds.

Day 135 - Bike to Art: Skyline View

The ride ended at the Shattering Silence sculpture near the Judicial Building. The view back towards Downtown from this spot is excellent.

This was an amazing event with a fantastic turnout. I was privileged to be the architectural tour guide for this group, and I look forward to doing this again next year!

Project365: Day 134 - Des Moines Farmers Market

One of the best Farmer's Markets in the country takes place every Saturday morning from May to October on Court Avenue in Downtown Des Moines.

Project365: Day 127 - Lake Marion

Day 127 - Lake Marion, originally uploaded by Tim Bungert.

On a beautiful spring day (one of the first really nice ones in the Twin Cities, from what I hear) my dad and I took the canoe out on the west end of Lake Marion. There is a large bald eagle nest near the shore just above this spot, but no eagles were hanging out there when we paddled by.

Project365: Day 126 - Heritage Micro

Day 126 - Heritage Micro, originally uploaded by Tim Bungert.

I checked in on one of my geocaches in the Twin Cities. The bent coat hanger helps to prevent the container from sitting in water that collects in the bottom of that hole in the rock.

Project365: Day 123 - Shattering Silence

Day 123 - Shattering Silence, originally uploaded by Tim Bungert.

We did a test-run of our upcoming Bike to Art and Architecture tour this evening. Our tour route ends on the hill by the Iowa State Capitol and the Judicial Building.

This sculpture, "Shattering Silence" by Iowan artist James Ellwanger, sits on top of that hill looking back towards downtown.

The idea for this photo hit right between the eyes--literally. As we rode down the sidewalk toward the sculpture I happened to ride right through spot where the sun refracted just right through the orb in the center and created a blinding light.

After stopping and letting my eyes readjust to normal lighting conditions, I hopped off my bike and walked back to that same spot to get the photo.

Project365: Day 122 - Invitations

Day 122 - Invitations, originally uploaded by Tim Bungert.

Ever wonder what a stack of 220 handmade wedding invitations would look? Well, now you know.

We went with the DIY method for our invitations. It saved a lot of money, but it has taken a TON of time. They are nearly ready to be sent out, and I will be happy to see this pile disappear!

Project365: Day 121 - Bike Month: Raccoon River Park

Happy Bike Month!

Iowa is the Bike Trails Capitol of the World, so I thought I would kick off Bike Month with a photo of one of my favorite local trails. The 3 mile trail around Raccoon River park is made of nicely packed crushed rock. It loops around picturesque Blue Heron Lake and separates the lake from the Raccoon River.

I've made a personal goal to be very active on my bike during this Bike Month, so look for more bike-themed photos in the coming weeks!

Project365: Day 120 - Miniature Waves

Day 120 - Miniature Waves, originally uploaded by Tim Bungert.

We visited historic Fort Des Moines for a wedding Saturday afternoon. Outside the museum is beautiful reflecting pool. I wanted to get a shot of the old chapel or the museum building reflect in the glassy water of the shallow pool, but the wind did not cooperate. The breezes rippled the shallow water, but at least those ripples made for an interesting photo!

Project365: Day 119 - Relays Block Party

Day 119 - Relays Block Party, originally uploaded by Tim Bungert.

The 102nd Annual Drake Relays wrapped up over the weekend. Friday night was the Relays Block Party down on Court Avenue in downtown Des Moines.
