The 26-mile trail connects the towns of Ankeny, Sheldahl, Slater, Madrid, and Woodward. The signature feature of the trail is the 1/2 mile long High Trestle Bridge over the Des Moines River. The bridge deck is about 130 feet above the water below.
We got on the trail in Madrid and rode to the west end of the trail at Woodward. Our round trip distance was just under 13 miles. I'm hoping to come back up later this summer and ride the entire trail from end to end. The trail is connected to the other 670 miles of bike trails in Central Iowa, so I'm sure I could make a REALLY long day trip out of it and start my ride from home!
